Writing effective research articles for readers beyond SFL

Isaac Mwinlaaru

The objective of this workshop is to guide postgraduate students and novice researchers working with SFL to write effective research articles for a wider readership beyond SFL. The workshop is motivated by challenges faced by novice SFL scholars in making their writing accessible and of interest to the wider readership of top-tier journals whose scope is not necessarily SFL oriented. Participants will be guided through an effective generic structure of the article as well as effective writing of various rhetorical units, notably the abstract, introduction, literature review/theoretical framework and conclusion. Participants are expected to come along with drafts of research articles, preferably manuscripts that might have been rejected for reasons of inappropriate scope or limited readership. Participants who are currently not working on any drafts will benefit from the practical activities during the workshop. Issues of persuasiveness and positioning in academic writing will be highlighted during discussions.
